The Churchyard Census
Llanfihangel Genau'r Glyn Old & New Churchyards
INTRODUCTION
Between March 2003 and September 2004, a team of inscribers recorded the tombstone inscriptions of 1,535 burials in the old churchyard. A further 35 were either illegible or lying in a position in which they could not be read. The remaining 2.2% will be added to the records as and when they come to hand. Work is in progress to coordinate these records with the burial registers.
Between August 2005 and July 2006, using the same method as was used for the old churchyard, the inscriptions of 591 burials were recorded in the new churchyard. A further nine graves were marked with kerbs but with no inscriptions and one inscription was illegible due to weathering.
The inscriptions are recorded both in print, on CD-ROM and available for you to download here on the Treftadaeth Llandre Heritage website. (Please scroll down to see the available file lists)
In addition to the record of inscriptions there are sections on the general history and maintenance of the Churchyard, on the wealth of elgynion and general poetry to be found on the tombstones and the many rich examples of late Victorian funerary art.
